Welcome back to the summer term as we travel on our learning journey together and thank you for your continued support.
This term our main topics this term for both year groups will include The Royal Wedding and Africa.
Year 2 will continue with their preparation for SATs in May which will be part of their teacher assessment of attainment in Reading, Writing (composition as well as spelling and grammar) Mathematics (arithmetic and problem solving) and Science.
Year 1 will be continuing to develop their skills related to these areas and they will undetake the Phonic Screening Assessment in June to assess their ability to decode words using phonics.
The children should not be worried about these assessments. We will continue to prepare them for them and they will be part of their normal school day .They are an opportunity to share their skills and understanding, something we do all the time. We do not want the children to feel worried about assessments, just to know that as always they should take care and do their best what ever they are doing.
The best way in which you can support your child is by helping them to practise their skills by:
Please can your child bring their PE kit to school on a Monday and it will be sent home on a Friday. PE this term will usually be on a Wednesday afternoon but this can be subject to change. The children will need to have both indoor and outdoor kit in school. Please check that names are in this kit as well as in other uniform as this will help us to relocate lost clothing correctly.
Your child should also bring a named, filled water bottle to school each morning which they are able to refill during the day. As the weather becomes warmer please could you ensure that your child has a sun hat and appropriate sun protection cream is applied at home each morning. This may be topped up by your child if necessary.
Homework: The children are expected to read at home with an adult at least 5 times a week. Please record this in the back of their homework diary. Do take time to use the reading questions suggested to develop their comprehension and awareness of the text and please include in your notes any other reading they undertake at home. Year 2 also have their own reading logs that they may write in. The children will have spellings to learn each week linked to their learning in class. This will include tricky words and words that follow a particular sound pattern. Each child will have a maths passport to support practising key maths. This is an ongoing task and little and often is recommended rather like the reading practice so that skills and knowledge become embedded. There will also be a themed task this may be a one off task or a mini project in which your child is able to investigate a personal interest linked to a topic we are studying at school to extend their learning.
Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any queries no matter how small or to speak to us if you or your child are unsure or worried because it is important that we work together to support your child's development and learning. Mrs Dobson and Mrs Tweed
